CNT has updated our Housing + Transportation Affordability website to now cover over 330 metros in the U.S. with expanded and improved data. And our analysis shows that only two in five American communities—or 39 percent—are affordable for typical households when their transportation costs are considered along with housing costs.
The Index for the first time examines 337 metro areas across the...

Too much good stuff from the guy who founded the Criterion Collection to find a single pull quote.
Simply moving printed texts to the tablets (as they have with the Kindle) will be of value, but within five to ten years the most successful publishers will have enthusiastically embraced new multimedia-based forms. More importantly, they will have figured out how to structure these works as vibrant...

In 1980 MIT researcher Richard Stallman was trying out one of the first laser printers, and decided that because it took so long to print, he would modify the printer driver so that it sent a notice to the user when their print job was finished. Except this software only came in its compiled version, without source code. Stallman got upset – Xerox would not let him have the source code. He...

Four Scenarios for the 21st century by Michael Cartier
“We are not living through an economic recession, but a reorganisation of our society.” A translation of the work of Michael Cartier. The infographics are pretty but the numbers don’t add up. I’ll have to read this for more.

SXSW Interactive Is Dead →
nickdouglas:
I wrote a little essay for SF Weekly’s culture blog. It’s about how VIP sections ruined SXSWi.
This is why Tim and I throw our Rocketboom + Next New Networks SXSW nonparty as a last minute announcement. Sure, it doesn’t get us any PR but we get people there and we have a good time. No lines, no VIP sections, no problem.

I am not a futurist, but at the end of it all, I’m pretty disappointed by where things seem to be heading. I spend a lot of effort on making things, and trying to get others to make things, and having someone in charge of what I make, and how I distribute it is incredibly grating. In our age of oversharing on the Internet, it was only a matter of time before people started looking to the same kinds of tools they use to connect with each other people to try to find ways to disconnect when those same people get to be a little… much. I couldn’t help noticing two of those tools…

Is it really hip to be glum? →
“Overwhelmingly, models advertising pricier brands were judged to look glummer. This is probably down to signalling, noted researcher Timothy Ketelaar: smiling indicates eagerness to please, suggesting low status. If a Prada model isn’t smiling, she clearly doesn’t need to, implying high status. Brands that target less wealthy customers use smiling models, suggesting...
