How robots see the world
Both brilliant and appropriately creepy, Robot readable world by Timo Arnall attempts to show us how computers “see” the world, gathering “meaning from our streets, cities, media and from us.”
So now that we know how the machines see us, how long will it be untii we start deploying camouflage in order to hide from the machines?

Head transplants and Szymborska’s Experiment « Mind Hacks
This is a link to an article with some slightly freakish footage of experiments in removing or transplanting the heads of dogs and monkeys. Click through if you’d like. The more interesting part imo is this bit:
Neuroscientist Steven Rose gives an interesting video commentary on the experiment, drawing from recent findings in ‘embodied cognition‘ which have suggested that the brain cannot be meaningfully switched because so much of our experience of our minds relies on the body in which it has developed and is embedded.
Sorry, Singularity lovers.

Total Annual Building Energy Consumption for New York City
The map represents the total annual building energy consumption at the block level and at the taxlot level for New York City, and is expressed in kilowatt hours (k Wh) per square meter of land area.
The data comes from a mathematical model based on statistics, not private information from utilities, to estimate the annual energy consumption values of buildings throughout the five boroughs. To see the break down of the type of energy being used, for which purpose and in what quantity, hover over or click on a block or taxlot.

Activists Fight Green Projects, Seeing U.N. Plot - NYTimes.com
Across the country, activists with ties to the Tea Party are railing against all sorts of local and state efforts to control sprawl and conserve energy. They brand government action for things like expanding public transportation routes and preserving open space as part of a United Nations-led conspiracy to deny property rights and herd citizens toward cities.
They are showing up at planning meetings to denounce bike lanes on public streets and smart meters on home appliances — efforts they equate to a big-government blueprint against individual rights.
“Down the road, this data will be used against you,” warned one speaker at a recent Roanoke County, Va., Board of Supervisors meeting who turned out with dozens of people opposed to the county’s paying $1,200 in dues to a nonprofit that consults on sustainability issues.
Local officials say they would dismiss such notions except that the growing and often heated protests are having an effect.
In Maine, the Tea Party-backed Republican governor canceled a project to ease congestion along the Route 1 corridor after protesters complained it was part of the United Nations plot. Similar opposition helped doom a high-speed train line in Florida. And more than a dozen cities, towns and counties, under new pressure, have cut off financing for a program that offers expertise on how to measure and cut carbon emissions.

They created IndyMogul, joined the team at the now legendary Next New Networks and now they;ve branched off on their own as The Indie Machines. One of their projects is the above music video for artist K.Flay.
It combines clever camera work, interesting post effects, and puppets. Lots of puppets.

Frequent eating tied to less weight gain in girls: study
REUTERS - Girls who ate frequent meals and snacks put on less weight and gained less on their waistlines over a decade than those who only ate a couple of times a day, according to a U.S. study.
Researchers, who tracked more than 2,000 girls for the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, said that smaller, more frequent meals and snacks may have kept girls satisfied for longer, preventing them from over-eating.

For Nathan Englander, Sunday Is a Day to Roam and Write - NYTimes.com
During the week, Nathan Englander, the novelist, short-story writer and soon-to-be playwright, is hypersocial, meeting friends for dinner on a nightly basis. But Sundays are mostly about quality time with his girlfriend, Rachel Silver, who is working on her Ph.D. in educational policy studies, and their gangly puppy, Calli, a Labrador retriever-boxer mix. Mr. Englander, 42, is having a big year professionally: His short-story collection “What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank” will be published by Knopf this week, and his first play, “The Twenty-Seventh Man,” will open at thePublic Theater in November. Mr. Englander, a former Upper West Sider who moved to Brooklyn in 2010, spends Sundays with Ms. Silver roaming Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, where they share an apartment.
Hey! Nathan (and his dog) are in the Times!
