Shadbolt and O’Hara explain 19th century philosopher John Stuart Mill’s view that society was capable of applying so much pressure that citizens might be prevented from making sensible or moral choices. Privacy is associated with the autonomy that Mill felt we needed because it enables us to make choices freely. If we value this freedom, say the authors, we will all have to play a much more active role in keeping privacy in place.
