Why I go By Drew
drew:My parents still call me Andrew, and I hated the nickname Andy. Always.
I labeled myself Drew in my teen years. I felt like a Drew. I thought I looked like a Drew. I have emerged into a Drew.
When my dad calls me Andrew, sometimes it doesn’t register. I’m used to Drew now.
Before I was legally changing my name to Awesomesauce, I was thinking of changing it to Drew. I sign Drew on a lot of things, but mostly Andrew. Doesn’t feel natural.
Do you go by your full name or a nickname and do you sometimes wish your legal name was your nickname?
My name is ‘Kenyatta Cheese’ but during high school I was ‘Kenny’ or ‘Ken’ which was “easier” for my teachers to remember (damn the ignorance!) From college onward my nickname was sometimes ‘Yatta’ or ‘Cheese’. Nowadays I’m a full time Kenyatta again but I allow my old friends to call me whatever was in vogue at the time.
Oh yeah, and because ordering takeout can be a pain (“No, that’s with a ‘K’ not a ‘P’”) most restaurants around here know me as ‘Bob’.
