thankless job
Yes, I love having vimeo upload/transcoder speed so fast. I recorded this video like less than 10 minutes ago and it’s already up.i talk to pile about this from time to time. aside from a working login form, this is probably *the* most important engine we’ve been tuning at vimeo. but just like automobiles, no one thinks twice about it when it’s humming. but when it’s stuck in the first gear, you bet your ass they will point out how slow it’s moving. people don’t care about how much upload traffic we need to accommodate. people don’t recognize that our engine isn’t run by turbo-charged google or yahoo server farms with an army of i.t. rockstars. and they certainly don’t seem to understand that we have basically one guy who’s been the chief mechanic trying to squeeze out another horsepower or two out of what we have. nor should they. but i do and we do. so i just want to say “good job” to peter who reminds me the trueness of this equation: site performance = user experience.
True that. Both Peter and Andrew have taken years off their lives from the stress caused by this continual process. Right now it’s all working like gangbusters.
Actually, we’re huge fans of Vimeo’s transcode time over at Rocketboom. We post to 20+ formats across a dozen-plus sites every day, and on most of them, the act of uploading and transcoding feels like we’re dropping our files in a hole. Vimeo’s transcodes are fast and their progress bar lets us know how much time to expect before it goes live. We feel very grateful for the Vimeo UX.
Now if we could only settle the stuttering playback issue on some embeds.
