Had an interesting convo on twitter with researchabout about that thelirivera "transmedia is for old people" post. Alex brings up good points about distinguishing the difference between multiplatform content and using those platforms to set and convey “brand” identity. Meanwhile my quibble with "transmedia" is its definition as an augmentation of "regular" media. It’s like describing smartphones as "smart phones."
Alex’s background is as an academic and a fan. While I’m not sure of Alisa’s experience, her “professional site” has some good thinking.
Either way, this stuff is starting to move really fast with everything from my early work on doctorwho to (others’ work on) lizziebennetdiaries and dennys to the big budget work of Taco Bell pushing out at the edges of the space on Tumblr, Twitter, and elsewhere.
I’d been talking to folks at everybodyatonce about the need for conference panels and papers and organizing in order to start territorializing the space. With conversations like this happening more and more, I feel like this needs to happen sooner than later. Fandom is evolving and
we need to it would do us well to understand how.
