Band Responds in the Worst Way Possible After Stealing Photographer’s Work
Petapixel has a writeup of the reddit thread about that “Band posts image to Instagram w/o credit” thing the other day.
First: interesting to see that photographers’ views on Instagram still seem to be in the “this isn’t photography” camp. Cropping for square and adding a filter constitutes a material change:
"But given that the photo had been altered, the watermark cropped out and the quality degraded, he requested via email that the band take the photo down or pay to use it."
Second: people (in this case, the band) still have no clue on how copyright works. Finding an image on the internet does not make it “public domain.” There is no “credit to whoever made this.”
"You have no legal claim as the photo is credited and is not posted for a monetary gain and features our likeness and image not yours. Also you have just got your self banned from any festival or show we ever play again in that region for life! Congrats!"
